I was called into a water damage this week here on Long Island. Liberty Mutual was the carrier and when speaking to them on the phone they were taking to me like i was on their vendors list asking me for all sorts of information that i didn't find appropriate as i am not on their vendor list. If i had a water damage parent this is what they reminded me of. I work for my customer, not for liberty mutual and i will treat my customer accordingly and do what is necessary to do the job within protocol. They are quite annoying and this only makes me think further do i want to be on a vendors list and jump through their silly hoops or stay outside the vendors list.  yes they may provide you with work but you will have to adhere to their rules and perhaps even bypass some things that the customer deserves.

As long as you are following IICRC guidelines for project protocol and documentation, the insurance company can't really make you follow anything additional. You work for the homeowner, not the insurance company. With that being said, if the insurance company refuses to pay at the end of the job, you are not going after the insurance company, but the homeowner who is ultimately responsible for payment. So, choose your battles wisely. It's never good to publicity to throw a homeowner in the middle of something unless you can justify your actions to them in a common sense, easy to understand way.

when on a vendor list..lets use liberty mutual for instance...you go into a million dollar home where high end cabinets are affected...yes industry standard says they need to be removed, however before you start disconnecting plumbing and pulling counter tops and ripping cabinets out Liberty Mutual is going to want to know about it regardless of what protocol you are following...they may even say to leave it in place until they come out in a few days to look at...you are now following their rules. It may be a week before they even come out...also they want you to call them from the site, tell them the scope of work, how much equipment you are leaving etc...if you say 2 dh and 7 fans but then realize you need more, you can't just leave more, you have to call and them why you have to leave more, why you didnt say more when you first called etc....yes you are going out to do the right thing by the customer, but if you are on that vendor list and want to continue getting hundreds of jobs a year from them you are going to follow their rules and jump through those hoops for them...some of the larger franchises have to enlist lots of office personal to deal with the hoop jumping games they pull...

I agree if you are their vendor list and want to continue to get work from them, they will definitely require the unreasonable, the impractical, and often even the unethical. My answer was addressing your original assertion if you were not on the vendor list.
